Wishes To Your Graduating Friends

Graduation is the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the associated ceremony. The date of event is often called degree day. The event itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation. In the United States and Canada, it is also used to refer to the advancement from a primary or secondary school level. Many colleges have different traditions associated with the graduation ceremony, the best-known probably being throwing mortarboards in the air.

hat toss

At many large U. S. institutions, where many hundreds of degrees are being granted at once, the main ceremony (in the sports stadium or other large venue) is followed by smaller ceremonies at sites around campus where faculty of each department distribute diplomas to their graduates. Another means of handling very large numbers of graduates is to have several ceremonies, divided by field of study, at a central site over the course of a weekend instead of one single ceremony. The final problem that arises is the large number of family members / guests that each graduating student wants to attend. Universities try to circumvent this by allocating a specified number of graduation tickets to each student that will be graduating. Students can then buy/sell/trade these tickets amongst each other via sites like www.graduationtickets.com or through their school's online forums, message boards, etc. Due to their nature, these tickets are often departed with at a premium depending on the level of competition.

In any case, typically each candidate is given a diploma by an academic administrator or official such as the dean or department head. It is also common for graduates not to receive their actual diploma at the ceremony but instead a certificate indicating that they participated in the ceremony or a booklet to hold the diploma in. At the high school level, this allows teachers to withhold diplomas from students who are unruly during the ceremony; at the college level, this allows students who need an extra quarter or semester to participate in the official ceremony with their classmates.

At most colleges and universities in the U. S., the faculty technically will recommend that each candidate be given a degree, which is then formally conferred by the president or other institutional official. Typically, this is accomplished by a pair of short set speeches by a senior academic official and a senior institutional official: "Mr. President, on behalf of the faculty of Letters and Science, I hereby declare that these candidates have met all the requirements for the degree of ... and request that such degree be conferred upon them." "Under the authority vested in me by the State of Iowa and the Trustees of Podunk College, I hereby confer upon these candidates the degree of ..."

Ways of Starting a Friendship Force Club

Friendship Force International is a group that was formed to help build a global community. The idea is to have people traveling throughout the world and staying with a family in another country. This helps them to develop an understanding of other cultures and forms friendships that span the globe. Friendship Force International works through these exchanges to build global goodwill. The basis of Friendship Force International is community based clubs. Becoming involved with a Friendship Force club is more than a hobby, it is a chance to change the world.

Friendship Force International has its main headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. It was founded in 1977 by Wayne Smith, the first president of the organization. Friendship Force International is comprised of almost half a million volunteers called ambassadors and hosts. Ambassadors are the people who stay with a family, the hosts, in a different part of the world from where they live. The organization is made up of individual Friendship Force clubs that arrange hosts and ambassadors from their community to take part in exchanges. The clubs also help each ambassador and host to arrange travel plans. Each ambassador is responsible for their expenses, as are the hosts.

The organization is non-profit and is solely maintained through fees, grants and donations. The work done by Friendship Force international has been recognized by a 1992 nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. The commitment to a global community is still as strong as it was at the beginning. This is simply an exchange program where the goal is for people around the world to make and build lasting friendships. It is the ultimate goal that this network of friendships helps to promote world peace and tolerance.

A person interested in starting a Friendship Force club can be located any where in the world. Clubs are required to follow the official rules and regulations of Friendship Force International. At the main headquarters in Georgia there are staff members who are dedicated to helping new clubs start up. The whole process can be done by working with these staff members.

The first step is finding people who would be interested in joining the club. The person organizing the club should explain about Friendship Force International, including the goals and how the organization is run. A club needs about 50 to 100 people that are interested in becoming hosts or ambassadors. Friendship Force club’s welcome members of all races, ethnicities and ages. There is no discrimination in Friendship Force international. All members are intern\viewed before being excepting into the club, though. This is a way to make sure that clue members will be dedicated to the goal and mission of creating a global community.

Once the members have been found, 5 to 10 people will be needed to form the leadership comity. The leadership comity includes the president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Officers serve a 1 or 2 year term. After the initial term members then vote on new officers.

The Georgia office will then send paperwork that needs to be filled out and submitted to make the club official. Clubs have fees of $10 per member or $15 per family. The fees are gathered by the club and then sent to Georgia with the paperwork. Once a club has been officially recognized they can begin their exchanges and hosting.

To be successful a club should have 100 or more members. The first inbound exchange, or hosting, can be done after a club has 50 members. After that the outbound exchanges, where someone from the club goes to stay with a family, can begin.

Friendship Force clubs are sometimes hard to form. Through help from the headquarters in Georgia, a person should be able to create a diverse and successful club. Friendship Force International is all about making new friends and what better way than to get involved in a local Friendship Force club.

What Experts Say About Friendships

The Meaning of Friendship

The concept of friendship has been discussed for thousands of years. Below are some links to academic articles and sources which attempt to bring together and summarise the definitions of friendship.

What The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy says About Friendship

"Friendship, as understood here, is a distinctively personal relationship that is grounded in a concern on the part of each friend for the welfare of the other, for the other's sake, and that involves some degree of intimacy. As such, friendship is undoubtedly central to our lives, in part because the special concern we have for our friends must have a place within a broader set of concerns, including moral concerns, and in part because our friends can help shape who we are as persons. Given this centrality, important questions arise concerning the justification of friendship and, in this context, whether it is permissible to “trade up” when someone new comes along, as well as concerning the possibility of reconciling the demands of friendship with the demands of morality in cases in which the two seem to conflict." Helm, Bennett (2005) Friendship, The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy

the encyclopaedia of informal education

"When approaching the notion of friendship, our first problem is, as Graham Allan (1996: 85) has commented, that there is a lack of firmly agreed and socially acknowledged criteria for what makes a person a friend. In one setting we may describe someone as a friend, in another the label may seem less appropriate. We may have a very thin understanding of what friendship entails. For example, Bellah et. al. (1996: 115), drawing upon Aristotle, suggest that the traditional idea of friendship has three components: 'Friends must enjoy each other's company, they must be useful to one another, and they must share a common commitment to the good'. In contemporary western societies, it is suggested, we tend to define friendship in terms of the first component, and find the notion of utility a difficult to place within friendship." Wikipedia Online Definition of Friendship

"Friendship is a type of interpersonal relationship that is found among humans and among animals with rich intelligence, such as the higher mammals and some birds. Cross-species friendships are common between humans and domestic animals. Less common but still of note are friendships between a non-human animal and another animal of a different species, such as a dog and cat. Individuals in a friendship relationship will generally welcome each other's company and often exhibit mutually helping behavior. Friendship is generally considered to be a closer personal relationship than an acquaintanceship, although there a range of 'degrees of intimacy' in both friends and acquaintances. For most people, there is an overlap between friends and acquaintances."

Cicero

"6. Now friendship may be thus defined: a complete accord on all subjects human and divine, joined with mutual goodwill and affection. And with the exception of wisdom, I am inclined to think nothing better than this has been given to man by the immortal gods. There are people who give the palm to riches or to good health, or to power and office, many even to sensual pleasures. This last is the ideal of brute beasts; and of the others we may say that they are frail and uncertain, and depend less on our own prudence than on the caprice of fortune. Then there are those who find the "chief good" in virtue. Well, that is a noble doctrine. But the very virtue they talk of is the parent and preserver of friendship, and without it friendship cannot possibly exist." [read entire article]

Cicero, M.T. On Friendship (De Amicitia), Translated by E. S. Shuckburgh, About.com

Aristotle

"[Aristotles] taxonomy begins with the premise that there are three main reasons why one person might like someone else. (The verb, “philein,” which is cognate to the noun “philia,” can sometimes be translated “like” or even “love”—though in other cases philia involves very little in the way of feeling.) One might like someone because he is good, or because he is useful, or because he is pleasant. And so there are three bases for friendships, depending on which of these qualities binds friends together. When two individuals recognize that the other person is someone of good character, and they spend time with each other, engaged in activities that exercise their virtues, then they form one kind of friendship. If they are equally virtuous, their friendship is perfect. If, however, there is a large gap in their moral development (as between a parent and a small child, or between a husband and a wife), then although their relationship may be based on the other person's good character, it will be imperfect precisely because of their inequality.." Emerson

"Friendship may be said to require natures so rare and costly, each so well tempered and so happily adapted, and withal so circumstanced, (for even in that particular, a poet says, love demands that the parties be altogether paired,) that its satisfaction can very seldom be assured. It cannot subsist in its perfection, say some of those who are learned in this warm lore of the heart, betwixt more than two. I am not quite so strict in my terms, perhaps because I have never known so high a fellowship as others. I please my imagination more with a circle of godlike men and women variously related to each other, and between whom subsists a lofty intelligence. But I find this law of one to one peremptory for conversation, which is the practice and consummation of friendship. Do not mix waters too much. The best mix as ill as good and bad. You shall have very useful and cheering discourse at several times with two several men, but let all three of you come together, and you shall not have one new and hearty word. Two may talk and one may hear, but three cannot take part in a conversation of the most sincere and searching sort." [read entire article]

The Meaning of True Friends

True Friends
by Kristie-Lyn Wightman

People today, in all this new world technology and thinking, have lost sight of what a true friendship is. So, in sprit of my best friend Tellie, I thought I would help the world out a little and explain what real, true friends are.

1. Friends don't have to be exactly the same. Friends have similarities but they also have their differences. They key to opening up the world of friendship is not only to expand on similarities but to accept each other's faults. Because you can't ever judge your friend.

2. Friends have to argue! No one likes to but it is necessary to be healthy. Cause if you agree on everything, either the government has expanded cloning subjects or someone isn't being true and is trying a little too hard.

3. You have to be comfortable together or else you just aren't going to click. If you feel edgy around the person then something isn't quite right.

4. Friends love unconditionally. They have there little angry moments but what's done is done and all is forgive and forget. Why let something that happened in the past ruin what happiness you could have in the future?

5. Believe in love at first sight because there is the equivalent in friendship. Some people think that you have to know someone really well to become good friends. Trust me, it's not true. If the first time you really spend time together you talk for 25 hours straight until 4:30 in the morning about some topic you thought no one else in the world understood, hun, that's real love at first sight.

These are only a few of the basics. Just remember, friends are forever. But only if you keep it that way. Don't diss your buds, love them instead. And when they drive you nuts, love them that much more for being just a little bit different and maybe just a little bit quirky!

We All Need Friends In Life

Friends are people who care
Who don't cry or shout when you ask them to share

Who can share fun times without getting mad
Who try to comfort you when you're sad

Who share secrets and never tell
Who make sure you're feeling well

Who can have a fun time and share their games
Who never let you take the blame

Friends are people who you need,
Who don't try to make you do something wrong

Who will stay friends long
Yes, we all need friends.
